Technology Insight | June 2026
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defines 6G (IMT-2030) application scenarios and key performance indicators, while 3GPP develops the detailed protocol specifications to ensure these targets are realized.
ITU defined 3 usage scenarios for 5G (IMT-2020). For 6G (IMT-2030), this expands to 6 scenarios covering a broader range of industry requirements.
ITU-R has defined 10 categories of radio interface KPIs for IMT-2030. Most indicators represent a 10x or greater improvement over 5G.
| KPI | 5G (IMT-2020) | 6G (IMT-2030) | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak Data Rate | 20 Gbps | 200 Gbps | 10x |
| User Experience Rate | 100 Mbps | 1 Gbps | 10x |
| Spectrum Efficiency | Baseline | 3x | 3x |
| Latency | 1 ms | 0.1 ms | 10x |
| Connection Density | 10^6 / km^2 | 10^7 / km^2 | 10x |
| Mobility | 500 km/h | 1,000 km/h | 2x |

Conventional wireless algorithms and computing chips alone cannot deliver the complex scenarios and stringent KPIs required by 6G. Every layer and module of the network must deeply integrate AI algorithms and AI computing power. In short, 6G must be AI-native.
Key Insight: AI-native networking means end-to-end intelligence from access to core, from physical layer to application layer. The network transforms from a data pipe into an intelligent organism capable of sensing, reasoning, and decision-making. This paradigm shift will fundamentally reshape optical interconnect infrastructure across data center interconnect (DCI), edge computing, and cloud collaboration.
6G's ultra-high bandwidth (200 Gbps peak), ultra-low latency (0.1ms), and massive connectivity (10^7/km^2) will directly drive optical transceiver speeds from current 400G/800G toward 1.6T and 3.2T within and between data centers.
Whether for massive data transfer in immersive communication, real-time processing in integrated sensing, or distributed AI computing across AI-native networks, all of these rely on high-bandwidth, low-latency optical interconnect infrastructure.
