Improper operation during this process often leads to prolonged link flapping, mismatched transmission rates or unexpected connection failures that disrupt normal business traffic.

Pre-Negotiation Preparation Checks

  1. Verify that both ends of the optical link use the same physical layer parameter specifications before powering on the devices, to eliminate basic mismatches that block normal negotiation initiation.
  2. Inspect the entire fiber path for excessive bending, dirty end faces or abnormal signal attenuation, as poor physical layer conditions can prevent the negotiation signal from being transmitted correctly between two sides.
  3. Clear all previous custom negotiation configurations on the connected switch ports, to reset the system to a default state that supports standard auto-negotiation protocols.

Step-by-Step Negotiation Execution

  1. Enable the standard auto-negotiation mode on both connected ports first, and wait for 30 to 60 seconds to let the two sides exchange capability information and match the highest supported transmission rate.
  2. If auto-negotiation fails to establish a stable link, manually set the same fixed rate and duplex mode on both ends, then restart the port to trigger a new negotiation process.
  3. Avoid making multiple configuration changes in quick succession during the negotiation phase, as frequent parameter adjustments will cause repeated link resets and extend the time needed to reach a stable state.

Post-Negotiation Stability Verification

  1. Check the real-time link status register readings on both devices after negotiation completes, to confirm the matched rate, duplex mode and working channel fully meet the expected requirements.
  2. Run a short period of low-traffic test transmission to spot any hidden intermittent negotiation flapping that may not show up in simple port status checks.
  3. Record the final negotiated parameters in the operation log, so you can quickly reference the working configuration when troubleshooting similar link issues in subsequent maintenance work.
