The core function of an integrated optical transceiver module is to realize electro-optical and opto-electrical conversion. It supports optical power control, modulated transmission, signal detection, IV conversion, limiting amplification, and signal decision regeneration. It also provides additional functions such as anti-counterfeiting information query and TX-disable. Common types include SFP, SFF, SFP+, GBIC, XFP, 1×9, etc.

In addition to opto-electrical conversion, optical transponder modules integrate multiple signal processing functions, such as MUX/DEMUX, CDR, function control, performance data collection and monitoring. Typical optical transponder form factors are 200/300pin, XENPAK, X2/XPAK and so on.

The integrated optical transceiver module is formally named transceiver, commonly referred to as an optical module or fiber module. It is an essential component in optical fiber communication systems.
